Confining membranes and dimensional reduction

چکیده

The dual theory describing the 4D Coulomb gas of point-like magnetically charged objects, which confines closed electric strings, is considered. The respective generalization of the theory of confining strings to confining membranes is further constructed. The same is done for the analogous SU(3)-inspired model. We then consider a combined model which confines both electric charges and closed strings. Such a model is nothing, but the mixture of the above-mentioned Coulomb gas with the condensate of the dual Higgs field, described by the dual Abelian Higgs model. It is demonstrated that in a certain limit of this dual Abelian Higgs model, the system under study undergoes naively the dimensional reduction and becomes described by the (completely integrable) 2D sine-Gordon theory. In particular, owing to this fact, the phase transition in such a model must be of the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless type, and the respective critical temperature is expressed in terms of the parameters of the dual Abelian Higgs model. However, it is finally discussed that the dimensional reduction is rigorously valid only in the strong coupling limit of the original 4D Coulomb gas. In such a limit, this reduction transforms the combined model to the 2D free bosonic theory. ∗Tel.: +39 050 844 536; Fax: +39 050 844 538; E-mail address: [email protected] †Permanent address: Institute of Theoretical and Experimental Physics, B. Estimate for the 0 glueball mass in QCD

We obtain accurate result for the lightest glueball mass of QCD in 3 dimensions from lattice Hamiltonian field theory. Using the dimensional reduction argument, a good approximation for confining theories, we suggest that the 0 glueball mass in 3+1 dimensional QCD be about 1.71 GeV.

بررسی عددی تأثیر خصوصیات خاک بر باندهای برشی

In some natural events such as soil failure the deformations are localized in narrow restrictions, which are called shear bands. This event which is a fundamental phenomenon in granular material, has been widely investigated during recent decades within expensive experimental tests and also some numerical simulations. Most of previously used numerical methods are based on continuum theories des...

Dimension Reduction of the Schrödinger Equation with Coulomb and Anisotropic Confining Potentials

We consider dimension reduction for the three dimensional (3D) Schödinger equation with the Coulomb interaction and an anisotropic confining potential to lower dimensional models in the limit of infinitely strong confinement in two or one space dimensions and obtain formally the surface adiabatic model (SAM) or surface density model (SDM) in two dimensions (2D) and the line adiabatic model (LAM...

Existence of Confinement Phase in Quantum Electrodynamics

We show that the four-dimensional U(1) gauge theory in the continuum formulation has a confining phase (exhibiting area law of the Wilson loop) in the strong coupling region above a critical coupling gc. This result is obtained by taking into account topological non-trivial sectors in U(1) gauge theory. The derivation is based on the reformulation of gauge theory as a deformation of a topologic...

سیستمهای الکترونی همبسته قوی در شبکه‌های ناکام

We give an overview of recent work on charge degrees of freedom of strongly correlated electrons on geometrically frustrated lattices. Special attention is paid to the checkerboard lattice, i.e., the two-dimensional version of a pyrochlore lattice and to the kagomé lattice. For the checkerboard lattice it is shown that at half filling when spin degrees of freedom are neglected and at quarter f...
